East Texas is renowned for its scenic beauty and the warmth of its Southern hospitality. In 1984, Mrs. Gertrude Windsor envisioned a collaborative effort to tackle the challenges of poverty in the Tyler community. Bringing together congregational and civic leaders, she founded a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable, community-driven solutions. This organization became known as People Attempting To Help (PATH), launching its mission in 1985 to serve hardworking East Texas families with compassion and support during difficult times.

Today, PATH continues to serve as a vital bridge between the generosity of individuals with abundant resources and struggling neighbors in need. Each year, PATH volunteers and staff embody their faith by serving over 25,000 individuals from Smith County and surrounding areas through personalized programs and services. Every person seeking assistance meets privately with a Case Worker trained to listen, provide encouragement, and connect families to resources—whether through PATH or other community partners.

PATH’s Choice Food Pantry, the largest in the region, and its Transitional Housing Program, unique to the area, are just two examples of its impactful initiatives. Each day, approximately 140 families, including an average of 10 new ones, visit PATH’s downtown Tyler location for support.

As a locally founded, funded, and governed social service agency, PATH has a legacy of community trust and a rare 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. Guided by the mission, PATH seeks to restore HOPE through a PERSONALIZED approach to EMPOWER our East Texas neighbors to THRIVE in our community.
